The stretch of the Thames that flows through Oxford answers to a second name: the Isis, a scholarly contraction of the Latin Tamesis that has appeared on university maps since the sixteenth century. Boats have worked this water for far longer.
Folly Bridge stands where the Saxon ford at Grandpont once carried oxen across the shallows, giving the city its name. A stone crossing replaced the ford around 1085. The present bridge dates from 1827.
Salter Brothers began running steamers from this bank in 1858, carrying passengers downstream to Abingdon and Reading in an age when the railway had not yet taken the tourist trade. Timber launches with brass fittings still tie up at the same quay.
